Photographs made for their own sake
These photographs were made for their own sake. I am after the frame that holds up with no caption under it, no product name attached, nothing to explain it. That standard is high enough that anything clearing it can also carry a brochure cover or a homepage without being propped up.
It also happens to be built for the page. Thirty years of designing with photographs means I compose knowing that someone will set type on this, that something has to bleed off the left edge, and that the web version has to crop square and still hold together. So the frames come with room to breathe and a crop already anticipated, which is why work that started as personal seeing tends to drop straight into a layout without a fight.
The gallery covers portraits, landscapes, and event coverage, from Indiana to Montana.
Shot into the light rather than with it, which is what turns haze between the trees into visible beams. Black and white removes the green that would otherwise dominate and leaves the light as the subject. The hammock and cabin give the beams something to land on.
Close enough that the helmets fill the frame and the logo is unmistakable. One player in profile and one facing the camera gives the pair an axis instead of a lineup. Moving in is what turns team coverage into portraiture.
Coordinated red is what makes selective color legible across five people. Holding the wardrobe to a single color keeps the effect reading as a deliberate choice at a glance. Group portraits need a rule, and here the rule is a color.
The road is the composition. It enters at the bottom edge and delivers the eye to the storm, which is the only place the picture wants you to end up. Black and white keeps the clouds heavy instead of pretty.
A senior portrait is a photograph of a person on the edge of leaving, so putting her on the center line and letting the road converge behind her says the thing the pose cannot. The plaid picks up the maples, which keeps wardrobe and setting in one palette instead of two competing ones. Opening the aperture turns the barn and the treeline into color rather than detail, and color does not compete for attention.
The chair is loud on purpose. A dense floral works behind a child because the pattern has no focal point of its own, which leaves the face as the only place to look. Feet up is the pose that makes a posed photograph stop looking posed.
Shot as cutouts so one session could serve a rack card, a poster, and a banner without a reshoot. Black clothing holds three figures as clean silhouettes at any size. The poses were built for cropping, since every piece in the set needed a different shape.
The stone supplies texture and the peach bouquet supplies the only color, so the eye lands on the couple without being directed there. Converting the architecture to black and white unifies the mixed stone tones and leaves the dress holding the only clean white in the frame.
Selective color earns its keep only when the color is the story. The bouquet is the single saturated element in an otherwise monochrome frame, and the clasped hands behind her back hold the gesture still enough that the color reads as observed rather than applied. Everything else is left to tone.
The same chair as the solo portrait, which is how a session produces a set instead of a series of unrelated frames. Matching cardigans and headbands handle the coordination so the posing does not have to. Waiting for the older sister to lean in and kiss the younger gives the frame a gesture no instruction would have produced.
Black and white because the drama here is tonal rather than chromatic. Snow streaks against dark rock give the peaks their structure, and the pine foreground supplies a scale reference the mountains cannot supply themselves. That foreground is what gives the range its true size.
Lit softly enough to render skin honestly rather than erase it. The mottled backdrop and the sequined beret sit in the same tonal family, which lets the expression carry the frame unassisted. Chin on hand is a standard pose because it works.
